Wandlitzsee

Wandlitzsee is a clear, quiet lake in the Barnim Natural Park north of Berlin, about 35 kilometres from the city centre. It’s one of the better options for a day out that combines proper swimming with a landscape that feels genuinely removed from urban life — pine forests, flat cycling terrain, and a small town with enough infrastructure to make the trip comfortable.

Getting there is straightforward. The Heidekrautbahn regional railway connects Berlin’s northern districts to Wandlitz in around 45 minutes, running from Gesundbrunnen and stopping at several points along the way. The station at Wandlitz is a short walk from the lake. By car, the route north from Berlin passes through Pankow and Bernau and takes a similar amount of time.

The lake is larger than many of the swimming spots closer to the city, which means it absorbs visitors better and rarely feels crowded outside of peak summer weekends. The water is clear and the swimming is good. There are designated areas with some basic facilities, but much of the shoreline is accessible directly from the forest paths.

The area around the lake offers flat cycling routes through the Barnim park. A loop that takes in Wandlitzsee, the surrounding forest, and one or two of the smaller nearby lakes makes a full half-day. The town of Wandlitz itself is small but has cafés and a few options for a meal.

Wandlitzsee rewards an early start and a slow return — the kind of day that’s harder to have without actually planning it.
