Electronic

Electronic music is the one area where Berlin’s reputation is completely deserved. The city shaped the sound of techno after reunification and has been central to the development of house, ambient, and experimental electronic music ever since. The venues, the culture, and the approach to nightlife here are genuinely different from anywhere else.

The big clubs — Berghain, Tresor, Watergate, About Blank — have long queues and defined sounds, but they’re not the whole picture. Berlin’s electronic scene also lives in smaller venues: KitKat Club, Sisyphos, Wilde Renate, Arena Club, and dozens of less permanent spaces that appear for a season and then move on. The underground is where a lot of the most interesting things happen.

Format matters here more than in most cities. The same DJ playing a two-hour set at a small bar versus a six-hour closing slot at a major club will feel completely different. Outdoor events in summer — at Else, on the Spree, in Treptower Park — have a particular atmosphere that’s hard to replicate in winter. Warehouse parties in Friedrichshain industrial spaces are a different thing again.

The scene is best experienced with patience and without a rigid schedule. Shows run late, lineups shift, and the best nights rarely follow a plan. These guides aim to help you find things worth going to and understand what you’re walking into.
