Francos de Montréal

Francos de Montréal is the city’s major French-language music festival — nine days of outdoor free concerts and indoor ticketed shows centered on the Quartier des spectacles. It runs the week before the Jazz Festival, giving late June in Montreal a nearly unbroken stretch of outdoor live music from mid-month through early July.

The free outdoor program is the heart of it. Multiple stages run across Place des Festivals and adjacent spaces each evening, covering Québécois pop, chanson, folk, hip-hop, and electronic music in French. It’s a bilingual event in practice — the performances are in French, but the crowd is a mix — and for visitors it’s one of the better windows into the contemporary Québec music scene without needing to hunt for venue listings.

Ticketed concerts inside Place des Arts and Théâtre Saint-Denis bring in established artists from France, Belgium, and francophone Canada. These sell out in advance and are worth booking if a specific artist is on the bill.

The Quartier des spectacles is straightforward to reach — metro to Place-des-Arts or Saint-Laurent — and the area is pedestrian-friendly during the festival. Eat before the biggest evening crowd hits, around 18:00-19:00, when the outdoor stages are at their fullest. Coming slightly earlier gives you a better spot and easier movement between stages.
