Festival TransAmériques (FTA) is one of Montreal’s most respected performing arts festivals — a bilingual, international showcase of contemporary dance and theatre that brings in companies and artists from across the Americas, Europe, and beyond. It runs for several weeks in late May and early June, with most performances in established venues around the city: Place des Arts, Usine C, Espace Go, and others depending on the year.
The programming is deliberately ambitious: FTA is not a mainstream festival. It selects work that challenges form, mixes disciplines, and prioritizes artistic risk over easy accessibility. That makes it genuinely worth planning around if contemporary dance or experimental theatre is your thing, and a harder sell if you’re looking for something light. Most productions are ticketed, and performances at smaller venues sell out.
For visitors, FTA is a good reason to spend an evening at a venue you might not otherwise enter. Many of the companies performing are touring from elsewhere, which means this may be the only chance to see the work in North America. Check the program on the FTA website for the full lineup, descriptions, and availability — the range of styles and formats varies considerably from show to show.
Best for people who want a sharper, more considered performing-arts night rather than a standard concert or outdoor festival wander.
