Orankesee Swimming Guide
Orankesee is one of Berlin’s better small-lake lido choices: local, family-friendly, and more manageable than the famous west/east headline beaches. The official swim is Strandbad Orankesee in Alt-Hohenschönhausen.

How To Use It
Choose Orankesee when you want a proper Strandbad but would rather not fight the scale and fame of Wannsee or Müggelsee. It is better for a family half-day than a long scenic escape.
Berlin.de says the lido has offered bathing in Berlin’s northeast since 1929. visitBerlin notes that the lake is nearly seven metres deep at its deepest point and that a short trail circles the lake.
History And Odd Details
Orankesee sits in a villa-district landscape with the nearby Obersee. The name is usually traced to a Slavic root, often explained as a reference to reddish-brown water. That makes it one of those Berlin lake names where the place feels local and quiet, but the word itself points much deeper into the region’s settlement history.
The lido’s long run since 1929 gives it a very different feel from improvised wild-swim banks: this is an old neighborhood institution, not a recently discovered beach.
Before You Go
Check LAGeSo for water quality and the lido/operator page for current hours and prices. Because this is a smaller place, peak weekend heat can change the experience quickly.
