How To Use It
Use the Berlin-side official spots if bathrooms matter: both north and south list mobile WCs in LAGeSo. The Brandenburg-side An der Badewiese entry lists gastronomy but no WC in the official state data.
Berlin.de describes the water as having excellent quality with good visibility and low algae growth, but still check current warnings. A lake can change quickly after storms, heat, or contamination events.
History And Odd Details
The Berlin-Brandenburg border runs through the lake. During the Cold War, the border between West Berlin and East Germany was marked by buoys in the water, and wall infrastructure blocked eastern access to parts of the shore. Brandenburg Tourism notes that the border opening in Groß Glienicke came on Christmas Eve 1989.
The lake is also tied to Thomas Harding’s book The House by the Lake, about Alexander Haus on the north-western shore and the families who lived through 20th-century German history there.
Before You Go
Pick your exact bathing spot before leaving; the shore is long and access varies. Check both LAGeSo and Brandenburg if you are crossing between Berlin and Potsdam sides.
