Commonground Berlin Permanently Closed: The Full Story (2026 Update)

The short answer: Commonground, the café-by-day, bar-by-night spot on the ground floor of the Circus Hotel at Rosenthaler Platz, closed permanently on May 15, 2020. It never reopened. The reason the question is trending again in 2026 is that its former home, the Circus Hotel itself, announced in May 2026 that it will close, ending nearly three decades of the Circus story at Rosenthaler Platz.
Here is the full story, in order.
What Commonground was
If you spent any time around Rosenthaler Platz between 2016 and 2020, you knew Commonground even if you never caught the name: the warm, plant-filled corner room at Rosenthaler Straße 1, under the Circus Hotel, where freelancers colonized the big tables over flat whites all afternoon and the lights dimmed for pale ale and cocktails in the evening.
It was run in collaboration with Berlin coffee folks rather than as a generic hotel lobby café, and it worked. Good WiFi, plenty of power outlets, a small courtyard that caught the afternoon sun, brunch on weekends, workshops and community events in between. Local guides routinely listed it among the best laptop-friendly cafés in Mitte, and for four years it was one of the more pleasant answers to “where do I work for a few hours near Rosenthaler Platz?”
The 2020 closure
Commonground closed its doors on May 15, 2020, in the first pandemic spring, after roughly four years of operation. The farewell note on its website thanked “all our visitors, workshop hosts and crew” and held out hope of reopening in a different Berlin location in 2022.
That reopening never happened. The website was never updated again, the space under the hotel was eventually relaunched as the Circus’s own café, and Commonground quietly became one of the many Berlin hospitality casualties of 2020 that were never formally eulogized, which is partly why, years later, people still search to confirm whether it is really gone.
It is. Permanently.
Why everyone is searching again in 2026
On May 28, 2026, Berliner Zeitung broke the news that the Circus Hotel: the building Commonground lived in, will close at the end of October 2026, after nearly three decades of the Circus brand at Rosenthaler Platz. If you half-remembered the café on its ground floor, “Commonground Berlin closed” is exactly what you would type. Hence the 2026 search spike for a place that actually closed six years earlier.
The hotel’s stated reasons, per owner Andreas Becker, are a familiar Berlin litany:
A large backlog of renovations that neither the building’s owner nor the hotel was willing to fund. Sharply higher operating costs: water, energy, heating: plus what Becker calls a “massive” 51% rise in the minimum wage over ten years. Online booking platforms taking 18% of revenue, on top of the 7.5% city accommodation tax. And Berlin’s broader tourism slump: arrivals still haven’t recovered to pre-pandemic levels, not helped by BER’s thin long-haul connections.
Becker also aired blunter complaints about the state of central Berlin: open drug use and visible homelessness around the Platz, which made the closure announcement a small culture-war story in the local press in its own right.

Is the Circus Hostel closing too?
Not yet. The Circus Hostel, across the square at Weinbergsweg 1a, is a separate operation by the same group and continues to run for now. But the owners have said they are looking for a new address where they can combine hotel and hostel under one roof, and as of June 2026 no new location has been announced, with the group describing Berlin’s property market as a difficult place to find one. So while the hostel survives the October closure, its long-term future at Rosenthaler Platz is open.
The Circus group employs around 200 people and started back in 1997 as a backpacker hostel on Reinhardtstraße; it grew into one of the city’s best-known independent budget stays, with Lonely Planet recognition along the way. The end of the hotel is a genuine loss for the square.

Where to go instead
If what you miss is the Commonground formula: laptop-friendly café by day, drinks by night, right on the Platz, the immediate neighborhood still delivers:
St. Oberholz (Rosenthaler Straße 72a, directly on the square): the original Berlin laptop café, still the default co-working-over-coffee spot at Rosenthaler Platz. The many cafés up Weinbergsweg toward Weinbergspark cover the flat-white-and-WiFi brief with less of a scene. And for the evening half of the formula, Torstraße and the streets of the Scheunenviertel are a short walk away.
